Translation of Marc Müller Interview

I interviewed Marc Müller, a prolific supporter of Thomas Mann’s work. He is, to my taste, one of the most significant literary voices on the internet, and I must say I deeply value how enthusiastically, and critically, he promotes the works of Thomas Mann. Marc, thank you for appearing on the channel, and hopefully we can do more of these videos soon. The original German text is below my translation into the English. I am Marc Müller and I am an Instagram blogger, with the username @lustaufbuch, and I write about Classics, contemporary literature, and non-fiction.

How did you come to Thomas Mann?

​

I first read something of Mann’s in 2019, Buddenbrooks to be exact. I stopped reading after Part One, about fifty pages in, because all of the similar sounding names were so chaotic for me.

A year later, in June or July 2020, during the pandemic, I began Death in Venice, and after thirty pages, I hardly understood anything and because of this, the next day I began again at the beginning and read sentence for sentence. At that moment, my love for Thomas Mann’s work began, especially for his special and knowing language.

Accordingly, I read nothing else aside from his stories and novels until October of that year.

After that, I began to engage with his biography (his life as well as his very interesting family) and I now have one and a half entire bookshelves of works on, about, or by the Mann family. In the intervening years, I have read most of these works a second time, and listened to many as audiobooks.

Please talk about the Thomas Mann Botschaft.

This year, I was selected to be a Thomas Mann Representative, because we are celebrating his 150th birthday, and also are remembering the 70th anniversary of his death.

I was not directly asked to be a representative, instead I reached out to S. Fischer Verlag, Thomas Mann’s publisher, because two other bloggers had reached out to me about it and asked if I would be a representative due to my large Thomas Mann book club. I actually did not know anything about the Thomas Mann Botschaft until another bookstagrammer explained that S. Fischer was looking.

To accomplish all of this, the bookstagrammer recommended me to S. Fischer and I also wrote S. Fischer on my own, because I had several ideas for Thomas Mann’s 150th, for example the book club, that I thought would complement the Botschaft.

I got an answer in January, and they pledged that I would be a Thomas Mann Representative and that S. Fischer found my ideas good.

Why is Thomas Mann’s 150th birthday (and 70th death day) so important?

​

All anniversaries are important, especially those which refocus us on unknown authors, or authors whose works have been forgotten, and those will draw attention to such authors.

Even if Thomas Mann is neither unknown nor forgotten, there are plenty of people who have never read his work and this year they will finally do so. In contrast, others may know of novels or stories, but will become familiar with new sides of Thomas Mann through the newly published materials, for example the new pressing Mann’s BBC speeches, Deustsche Hörer.

What is your favorite work by Mann and what would serve as a good introduction to him more generally?

To begin, I would recommend his early stories, but probably not the novella Death in Venice, as that is more demanding of the reader. For example, Tonio Krüger aligns well with this goal of starting his works as it deals with unrequited love, which is familiar to us all and all of us can related to this subject.

As far as novels, I would recommend Buddenbrooks, or also the lesser-known novel The Holy Sinner. Also, Magic Mountain would align well with this goal of approach Mann’s works, if it weren’t for the long philosophical discussions within the work.

For me, my favorite work is difficult to determine, as I do not appreciate any other writer like I do Thomas Mann.

Upon rereading his works, I enjoyed them differently than I did initially. So, for example, only the second time reading A Man and His Dog, did I really discover my love for the text. Since then, that story is, for me, among Mann’s best that he ever wrote. In fact, I even wrote my thesis for my degree (my admissions thesis) about the relationship between dogs and people in Mann’s works. If I had to pick a novel to be my favorite, I would say Buddenbrooks or Tonio Kröger.

Ich bin Marc Müller und blogge auf Instagram, unter dem Account @lustaufbuch, über Klassiker, Gegenwartsliteratur und Sachbücher.

Wieso Thomas Mann: wie kamst du zu ihm?

Das erste Mal las ich 2019 etwas von Thomas Mann und zwar die „Buddenbrooks“. Jedoch brach ich den Roman nach dem ersten Teil – etwa fünfzig Seiten – ab, da es mir mit den vielen ähnlich klingenden Namen zu chaotisch war.
Ein Jahr darauf, im Juni oder Juli 2020, während Corona, begann ich die Novelle„Der Tod in Venedig“, doch verstand nach etwa dreißig Seiten nicht viel, weswegen ich am nächsten Tag nochmal von vorne anfing und nun Satz für Satz las. Ab dem Moment begann meine Liebe für Thomas Manns Werke und seine besondere und bewusste Sprache.
Dementsprechend las ich danach bis Oktober nichts anderes als alle Erzählungen und Romane von ihm.
Erst danach habe ich mich mit der seiner Person und der mehr als spannenden Familie beschäftigt und habe nun eineinhalb Bücherregale von und über die Familie Mann.
Mittlerweile habe ich die meisten seiner Werke auch mindestens zweimal gelesen und mehrmals als Hörbuch gehört.

Was ist mit dieser Thomas Mann Botschaft?

Dieses Jahr darf ich Thomas Mann Botschafter sein, da wir einerseits seinen 150. Geburtstag feiern, aber auch seinen 70. Todestag betrauen.
Ich wurde dazu nicht direkt angefragt, sondern fragte selbstständig beim S. Fischer Verlag – dem Verlag Thomas Manns – an, nachdem mich bereits aufgrund meines Buchclubs zwei andere Blogger*innen darauf angesprochen haben, ob ich denn Thomas Mann Botschafter sei. Doch ich wusste davon gar nichts, bis mir ein größerer Bookstagrammer erzählte, dass der S. Fischer Verlag Botschafter suche.
Daraufhin empfahl dieser mich dem Verlag und ich schrieb ihm eigeninitiativ, da ich bereits einige Ideen für das Jubiläumsjahr hatte, z.B. den Buchclub und sich diese gut ergänzen würden.
Anfang Januar bekam ich dann eine Antwort und die Zusage, dass ich Thomas Mann Botschafter sein werde, da sie meine geschilderten Pläne für gut befanden.

Das Jubiläum Jahr, warum ist das wichtig?

Sämtliche Jubiläumsjahre sind wichtig, um besonders das Werk von unbekannteren oder mittlerweile vergessenen Autor*innen vermehrt in den Fokus zu rücken und auf sie aufmerksam zu machen.
Auch wenn Thomas Mann weder unbekannt noch vergessen ist, gibt es genug Menschen, die noch nichts von ihm gelesen haben und das eventuell dieses Jahr tun werden. Andere kennen dagegen einige Romane und Erzählungen, aber lernen durch die neuen Veröffentlichungen andere Seiten von Thomas Mann kennen, bspw. durch die Neuauflage seiner BBC-Reden „Deutsche Hörer“.

Was ist dein Lieblingswerk von Mann und welche Werke funktionieren als intro/erste Mannwerk?

Zum Einstieg würde ich seine frühen Erzählungen empfehlen, aber nicht gleich die Novelle „Der Tod in Venedig“, da sie doch anspruchsvoller ist.
Zum Beispiel eignet sich „Tonio Kröger“ sehr gut, da es um unerwiderte Liebe geht. Das kennt jeder und wird jeden berühren.
Als Roman würde ich „Buddenbrooks“ oder auch den leider eher unbekannten Roman „Der Erwählte“ empfehlen. Auch „Der Zauberberg“ eignet sich gut, mal abgesehen von den langen philosophischen Gesprächen.
Aber ein Lieblingswerk, das ist schwer. Bei keinem anderen Autor fehlt es mir so schwer wie bei Thomas Mann.
Als ich das erste Mal seine Werke gelesen habe, gefielen mir andere gut als beim zweiten Mal. So habe ich z.B. erst beim zweiten Lesen „Herr und Hund“ so richtig für mich entdeckt und lieben gelernt. Seitdem gehört die Erzählung für mich zu einer der besten, die er geschrieben hat. Ich habe sogar meine Abschlussarbeit des Grundschullehramt-Studiums – genannt Zulassungsarbeit – über „Die Hund-Mensch-Beziehung im Werk Thomas Manns“ geschrieben.
Aber wenn ich einen Roman und eine Erzählung auswählen müsste, wären es wahrscheinlich „Buddenbrooks“ und „Tonio Kröger“.
